The Subaru Outback is a large estate car that benefits from the Subaru symmetrical all wheel drive system and oppositely opposed boxer engine. The Subaru Outback has a higher ride height than most estate cars (7cm higher than the Subaru Legacy) due to an increase in suspension travel and a larger wheel and tyre profile combination. This gives rise to a 5cm (or 2 inch) increase in ground clearance for rough terrain driving. The Subaru Outback also features protective wheel arch extensions and a more rugged style front and rear bumpers than the Subaru Legacy.

The Subaru Outback and Subaru Legacy appear similar which one is better?

That depends upon your needs from a Subaru. The Subaru Outback offers more ground clearance for greater off road capability and a higher ride height for improved visibility. The Subaru Outback is also fitted with self-levelling suspension for when the vehicle is heavily loaded or for towing. The Subaru Outback also comes with larger profile semi off road, all terrain tyres.

The Subaru Legacy SE model for example, comes with 18 inch wheels, low profile tyres and Bilstein shock absorbers for a more sporty drive, this makes the Subaru Legacy more agile and allows flatter cornering while giving a smooth and comfortable ride for long distance driving.

Is the Subaru Forester bigger than the Subaru Outback?

No, it's a common misconception that the Subaru Forester is a bigger car than the Subaru Outback and the Subaru Legacy but both are longer and wider than the Subaru Forester. So, the Subaru Outback and Subaru Legacy have more passenger space and more boot space than the Subaru Forester.

Do Subaru make a Diesel Automatic Subaru Outback?

Unfortunately at the moment there is no diesel automatic in the Subaru range, this is something that we are hoping will be available in the future.

What engines are available in the Subaru Outback?

The Subaru Outback has either the new 2.0 boxer diesel engine with a manual 6 speed transmission or a 2.5 litre boxer petrol engine with a new lineatronic automatic transmission. There is also a Subaru Outback with a 3.6 litre 6 cylinder boxer petrol engine with an automatic transmission.

What does lineatronic mean?

Lineatronic is the name for the brand new 6 speed automatic gearbox in the Subaru Outback. This system is a continuously variable transmission which means there is no changing gear delivering seamless performance in the Subaru Outback, while keeping the engine operating in the most favourable RPM range for any driving speed to give the perfect balance between performance and economy.

So is the Subaru Outback any good off road?

Yes, the permanent all wheel drive system in the Subaru Outback is not just for road holding and safety, but it is the backbone of what Subaru is all about. The Subaru Outback is designed to go up tracks, across fields, by vets, farmers, estate keepers, fishermen or to go on shoots. If you are using the Subaru Outback for recreation or for work the vehicle will perform brilliantly.

What sort of MPG can I expect from the Subaru Outback?

The Subaru Outback diesel is the most economical returning a combined 44.1 MPG, and the petrol 2.5 litre automatic returns a combined 33.6 MPG. For the Subaru Outback as a permanent 4 wheel drive large estate car this is outstanding economy.

So what do I get as standard on the Subaru Outback and what is an optional extra?

Standard equipment on all new Subaru Outback's includes, dual zone digital climate control, heated seats, electric driver's seat with memory, steering wheel mounted cruise control, Bluetooth hands free and audio controls, xenon headlights, alloy wheels, electric sun roof, electric heated folding mirrors, front and rear electric windows, automatic wipers, automatic self-levelling headlights, on board computer, traction control, front side and curtain air bags, motion adaptive power steering the list goes on and on.

Sound like the Subaru Outback has a good package?

It really is, and on top of all that specification is the permanent symmetrical all wheel drive, standard on all new Subaru Outbacks, because you never know what driving will throw at you.
