Flying the flag in Jordan!

Our very own Service Manager Simon Green has just returned from Jordan where he was racing a Westfield Megabusa in the country's most prestigious hillclimb.

Simon has had great success in the UK driving his self built Westfield Duratec in hill climbs and sprints claiming class wins in nearly all of his events this season and breaking numerous track records in the process. The sport of hill climbing involves driving up a tarmac race track in the shortest time possible. Unlike racing the drivers compete on the track one at a time.

Syrian businessman Thabet Birro who is the Middle Eastern distributor for Westfield Sportscars first came into contact with Simon after watching his on-board videos on You Tube. "Thabet was looking to increase the awareness of Westfield in the Middle East by entering his car in local sprints and hill climbs. I was offered the drive and after a lot of questioning and apprehension, I took him up on the offer!"

The chosen event was the Rumman Al Hussein Hillclimb in Jordan, named after the late King Al Hussein who was a regular competitor.

The course is a 3km wind up a steep mountain road with 24 corners, almost twice the distance of the longest hillclimb in the UK!

Simon was competing against some of the top teams from all over the Middle East, most of whom were on significant sponsorship deals. With almost no spares, only one set of tyres and no prior experience of the track, Simon came home victorious with a class win and the privilege of being the fastest rear wheel drive car in the event. A significant achievement considering the Yorkshireman has never competed in 40° heat before! He later received his awards from the Prince of Jordan, Feisal Al Hussein.

After the success in Jordan, Simon was invited back to Syria to compete in a local Speed Test later in the season. Again Simon returned home with a class win and fastest RWD trophy in the bag to add to his growing collection of awards won already from his 2007 season in the UK championships.

Together, Thabet and Simon proved just how competitive Westfields can be in competition, while Thabet still rides around the streets of Damascus in the fully road legal MegaBusa racecar!
